Crayon painting on Canvas

Finished a painting today of a Russian Tumbler pigeon. This was my first attempt to use canvas- particularly with watermedia. I did an underpainting with Dr Ph Martin's Watercolors and the rest was done in Neocolor II crayons. The crayons worked really well on the canvas and didn't leave any crayon marks after the wash.  

I was happy with the final result- especially after attempting something new which is always a little nerve-racking for me.

When people first think of crayons they think of it usually as just a toy for children to play with and learn to draw. However more companies are coming out with artist's crayons- especially watersoluble crayons. 

Watersoluble crayons or watercolor crayons are produced by many companies. Unfortunately many are usually packaged for children so most people looking to begin with this unique medium don't know the many different choices that they have available.  I must add that even if a product is marketed towards children it doesn't mean it isn't a quality product that can be used and turned into a wonderful piece of art.

I have searched for all different "grades" of water-soluble crayons and in time will review each one and compare them and see how they compare to each other. I have found that even some of the less expensive crayons have many good qualities. I will be making color swatches and testing for lightfastness of each brand. 

In the gallery on the right I have shown different paintings I have done that are mainly done with watersoluble crayons. I have found that so far these crayons work well in mixed media, especially oil pastels , pen & watercolor paints.
