This review is on Crayola's Slick Stix
I am reviewing the 5 pack but the Slick Stix also come in a 12 pack
These are pretty awesome. I found the consistency really creamy and the colors very bright. The first column I applied the crayons dry then added water to the right side. They did not dissolve particularly easy but then again they are not advertised as water-soluble. However if you use a wet brush to the crayon itself and then apply it you can get better watercolor-like effects without leaving the crayon marks.
The 2nd column I added the crayons directly to wet paper. They seemed to dissolve better this way and the blue in particular seemed to spread very well.
On the left here I mixed yellow & blue and then added water with a bristle brush and it turned into a nice bluish-green. As you can see some of the crayon marks remain but I think it adds a nice texture.
On the right I applied them dry and then mixed them with my finger. In this way you can soften the edges and they actually blend very well.
When I attempted to draw with them I did have a difficult time learning to use them. I first applied the the color just using and picking up the color off of the crayon directly and I love the watercolor effects that gave but I wanted to try using the crayons directly onto the paper.
I guess the most frustrating part is that they don't dissolve very well just using a brush. However if you use your fingers to blend them on damp paper that seems to get the best results.
Overall ...
Pros: bright colors, creamy consistency, blend nicely with fingers, inexpensive, durable, covers large areas easily
Cons: don't dissolve well, difficult to do details
A good product but I definitely wish I had bought the 12 pack instead and was able to experiment with more of the colors.
