Caran D'Ache Neocolor I

This review is on the 15 set of Neocolor I Wax Pastels

These crayons also come in a set of 10, 30, 40 and individually
They look identical to the water-soluble Neocolor II and are indistinguishable except for the tiny label on the crayons and the box itself. These are not water-soluble.

The color selection is nice and has the same colors as many other of their products like the oil pastels, colored pencils, etc.

These are considered an artist-quality crayon and are lightfast and very pigmented. They blend very well and can be sharpened easily due to their small size. However they can break fairly easily if you are heavy-handed.

I did a small sketch just to see how the colors blended and they do pretty well for a wax crayon. The colors are exceptionally bright and smooth and many layers can be built up. The white crayon is awesome and lightens any of the colors significantly if it turns out to be too intense-looking.
They are probably nothing like any crayon you have probably tried before. As you would expect from the quality they do come with a high price tag.
Why would you want to try these instead of the Neo II's when they are so similar? Well you can use them in wax resist techniques and can even use them in combination with the Neo IIs. I think it's great to have such a high quality crayon to add to your toolbox just to experiment with different techniques.

Pros: lightfast, highly pigmented, blend well, smooth consistency
Cons: break fairly easily, expensive, smaller color selection than Neo II

They can be purchased on www.amazon.com , www.dickblick.com
